After several years of running his own small-business consultancy, Swenson Financial Services, in 1994 John Swenson turned his attention to the waste industry, joining Laidlaw Waste Systems as market controller of their New York operations.
John went on to learn all facets of nonhazardous solid waste management at Allied Waste Industries, which was the second largest such company in the U.S., as well as Capital Environmental Services, Casella Waste Systems, Winter Bros. Waste Systems, EnviroSolutions, and Waste Associates. He held positions such as corporate controller, vice president of operations, director of financial reporting, and chief financial officer.
During his 20+ year career in the industry, John acquired and divested more than 75 entities and spearheaded the raising of over $900 million in debt and/or equity to finance the companies’ growth strategies.
John relocated to Virginia in 2004 and put his broad knowledge of waste and business management to work to assist his friend Carlton Dudding in launching Advanced Wall Technologies in 2009. John joined AWT as a managing partner in 2011 to seize the opportunity to become a leader in responsible environmental stewardship by promoting AWT’s patented technological innovations to help the waste and power industries and others adopt methods for more efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective nonhazardous waste disposal.
John earned a degree in accounting from Elmira College in Elmira, New York, and is a Certified Management Accountant, active in various financial professional associations. He lives in Henrico County, Virginia, with his wife and son.
