safeBERM Logo 3Our encapsulated mechanically stabilized earthen (eMSE) berm system design, safeBERM® goes beyond any tradition MSE berm design by incorporating additional safety factors.   By integrating macroencapsulation, proactive liquids management, flattening out the exterior slope, and providing easy access the safeBERM® system provides protective features unmatched in today’s market.   The main components of the safeBERM® are as follows;

safeBERM® encapsulation consists of a geomembrane liner that is continuously welded to provide full encapsulation of the berm fill material.  The geomembrane liner may be accompanied by other geosynthetic layers depending on the section of the encapsulation.  The encapsulation is designed for the prevent migration of liquids into the berm fill for two purposes.  First, the encapsulation provides environmental protection by minimizing the risk of exposure of berm fill material.  Second, the encapsulation minimizes the risk of excess pore pressures that could develop within a berm when liquids are allowed to migrate into the berm fill.  By minimizing the potential for the buildup of pore pressure safety factors against failure are increased.

The safeBERM® face includes a significant decrease in a traditional MSE berm exterior slope from a maximum steepness of 1:6 (Horizontal: Vertical) to a slope of 1:1. This design includes a configuration of welded facing geomembrane, geogrid, drainage blanket (if needed), erosion control mat, select fill, and topsoil that are designed to facilitate installation and provide a suitable zone for establishment of a sustainable vegetative cover (or equivalent) over the exterior slope.

Generally located in the middle of the exterior slope of the safeBERM® is a 10 to 12-foot wide bench designed for single lane access and stormwater maintenance.  In addition to providing access and added stormwater control, the bench provides added slope stability and ease of maintenance.

Waste Industry Applications

MSE Berm technology has been around for years. In fact there are over thirty MSE berms at landfills across the United States. Some of these berms were permitted by a strategic partner of EnCAP-IT. Our technology/method allows for the beneficial reuse of certain materials in the wall construction, dramatically decreasing or eliminating the financial burden of the construction. The gate revenue of these materials (ash, impacted soils, dredge material, crushed glass, etc.) is charged to the generator and in most cases pays for the construction itself. Our patented method fully encapsulates the materials in a Subtitle D liner system which has already been approved by Virginia DEQ. (We are currently working with other states for approval; PA, FL, NC, NJ; just to mention a few.)

There has never been a substantive failure of an Landfill MSE Berm in the United States.

Power Industry Applications

Using patented macroencapsulation technologies allows generators to continue to beneficially reuse CCRs in structural berms and fills. safeBERM® solutions have an internal geomembrane envelope that completely encapsulates the fill material. These methods can be utilized in every facet of the strategic CCR management solution—closing ash ponds in place, converting to dry storage, strengthening existing sloped structures, or relocating CCRs for beneficial use.

safeBERM® technologies use a unique drainage system, with lined hydrostatic barriers around the boundaries of CCR storage and storage units.

Part 1 of 5: Coal Ash Storage – safeBERM® Bunker Storage System

EnCAP-IT’s safeBERM® Bunker approach is a viable alternative solution where CCRs can be stored safely at half the cost, in half the time.

• All coal ash is contained within a Subtitle D equivalent or other approved liner system and cap system.

• Coal ash mass stability is improved as EnCAP-IT’s fully encapsulated berms eliminate moisture from entering the system thereby reducing or eliminating seismic liquefaction.

• Coal ash would be beneficially used to construct an entombed (not just capped) storage facility at lower cost compared to traditional dry-storage construction or off-site disposal.

Part 4 of 5: Coal Ash Storage – safeBERM® Retro-Fit System

EnCAP-IT’s safeBERM® Retro-Fit approach is a viable alternative solution where CCR’s can be stored safely under half the cost and timeframe as compared to off-site disposal, moving the coal ash storage away from the waterways.

Beneficially Reuses coal ash to convert wet  basin(s) to dry encapsulated storage;
● Ash would be simultaneously utilized for the structural fill berm construction during ash removal and liner installation (saving time and providing a location to directly place the material);
● Meets coal ash management regulations;
● Flexibility of safeBERM® design accommodates site-specific configurations;
● The design of the safeBERM® can be changed mid-stream in order to accommodate some unknowns; i.e. more coal ash excavation then expected;

This method is half the cost and twice the efficiency compared to traditional methods. (i.e., Slurry Wall, Slurry Trench, or Slurry Cutoff Wall …)
